How to Get the Most out of Lectures
It is vital for any student to not only listen to a college lecture, but also to understand it! That is why we have come up with a few studying tips that will help you to develop habits of successful students!
Prepare for a class
It is always helpful to read the topic of a future lecture before attending a class. If you go through the material (not getting way too into details), you will grasp a general idea of what the discussion is going to be about and thereby you will be able to keep up the ball with your professor. You can glance through the text, read charts and tables, etc. – whichever way of reviewing information is the best for you.
Keeping yourself awake during class is a huge challenge for most of the students. However, it is crucial to stay focused and listen to a lecture. If you find yourself falling asleep during some classes, you may use these tips to stay awake:
- Bring some snack: If your professor allows students to have little snacks during the class, you can bring some with you. Do not get too much food though as you will get stuffed and feel even more sleepy afterward.
- Discomfort: Not the most attractive yet working method to stay awake is to make yourself a little bit uncomfortable (take off your jacket to feel a little chilly, or keeping yourself a little bit hungry).
- Water: Bring a bottle of water to class with you and have little sips from time to time. Keeping your body hydrated will help you to stay awake and focused.
- Energy drinks: Many students rely on energy drinks to carry them through college. However, we would recommend energy drinks only as the last resort as it can be harmful.
Be the “front man”
Students that want to learn and be successful always sit in the front row and you should do the same! By doing so, you will be able to hear everything, see all presentations and writings on a whiteboard without any problems. Moreover, your instructor will notice you and your desire to learn if you sit closer. However, make sure not to fall asleep.
Now, since you have made it to the class, would not you want to digest as much information as possible? You have to hear and understand everything that your instructor is telling. The most important thing is that you have to respect the professor, even if s/he is monotonously reading from a paper – you came here to learn, right? Ask questions, discuss moments that are not clear to you, and show that you are willing to learn.
If you start using these studying tips in your college life, you will develop habits of successful students and start getting the most out of lectures. Moreover, these skills will help you not only in college but in your future career as well!
